PUSAN - Korea's
Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism has announced a $500 million
(650,000,000,000 KW), 5 year investment plan to develop next generation digital
content.
Minister Yoo In-chon announced the plan on Wednesday, saying
that the plan will create new markets by intensively developing five areas of
futuristic content business. These include computer graphics, digital virtual
worlds, broadcasting-telecommunication convergent content, ubiquitous learning
content and virtual reality.
The goal is to create $5.4 billion (7 trillion KW) worth of
new markets and 130,000 new jobs in the industry by 2012.
The ministry will invest $77 million (100,000,000,000 KW) to
establish Asia's largest computer graphics
production base, and will support the participation of local CG companies in
global projects. Visual effects technologies like creature animation will also be
developed.
$61 million (80,000,000,000 KW) will be invested in the establishment
of digital virtual world platforms similar to Second Life, while $54 million
(70,000,000,000 KW) will be spent on the development of new type of convergence
content through the technologies of hologram, 3-D interactive, high quality 3-D
visual image restoration and intelligent content production.
A bill legislating this plan will be drawn up and submitted
by November.
