KDDI is starting the service with Japan Cablenet, a cable operator in which it owns a leading stake, but plans to expand it nationwide in partnership with other cable ops.

Service will allow subs to watch content via cable Internet and phone connections. The programming will range from movies to high school graduation ceremonies, with KDDI providing tech support and content delivery.

KDDI also will offer access to its library of 5,000 pics, TV shows, music concerts and other programming, charging $1.30 per view. Founded in 1984, KDDI has more than 20 million cell-phone subs.
